How does teeth whitening work?

Teeth can lose their brightness for a number of reasons, such as diet, ageing, certain medications, smoking and trauma. Teeth whitening is a gentle chemical process used to reduce discolouration and lighten teeth, resulting in a brighter smile.

At M20, we use Boutique whitening, a tried and tested professional system. It uses custom-made whitening trays and a specialised whitening gel to break down stains and dramatically enhance the appearance of your teeth.

Spread the cost of your treatment with interest free payments over 6 months. Payments from as little as £52 per month.

Treatment steps to your brighter smile

  • Firstly, we examine your teeth and gums to ensure they are healthy and suitable for whitening treatment. We take digital impressions of your teeth so your customised whitening trays can be produced
  • When your whitening trays are ready, we make sure they are a snug and comfortable fit. We show you how to use them with the Boutique whitening gel, and give you some advice for your treatment at home.
  • It is then over to you! Simply wear your whitening trays for a specified length of time each day for 2-3 weeks. The beauty of home treatment is you can choose exactly when and where you whiten your teeth!
  • Once your treatment is complete, we see you for a follow-up appointment. We check your teeth and make sure you are happy with your results. All that’s left is for you to enjoy your new sparkling smile!

Internal teeth whitening

If one of your teeth has become discoloured following root canal treatment, we can use internal whitening to improve its overall appearance. During a root canal, the innermost part of the tooth (the pulp) is removed and replaced with a rubber filling, which can sometimes cause your tooth to look less white.

With internal whitening, the lightening product is inserted into a drilled hole, and then sealed with a temporary filling. Around a week later, the filling and bleach are removed and, if necessary, the process is repeated. When the ideal shade has been achieved, the hole is permanently sealed with a tooth-coloured filling.

Frequently asked questions

Teeth whitening will only work on your natural teeth. It is not effective on replacement teeth and dental restorations such as crowns, veneers or dentures. These can be replaced to match your newly whitened teeth, or you may wish to have your teeth whitened before a restoration is fitted so it can be made in a whiter shade.
You can help maintain the whiteness of your teeth by keeping up with a good oral hygiene routine at home, including brushing your teeth at least twice a day. It is also best to avoid food and drink that may cause staining.
Teeth whitening is not permanent, but your results can last several years providing you maintain good levels of oral hygiene. You can keep your smile bright with regular top-up treatments, using your original whitening trays and a new tube of gel.
Professional home whitening is a superior option when it comes to brightening your teeth. Professional dentists are best placed to look after your teeth and gums, supervising your treatment to ensure no damage occurs. With professional take-home whitening, your mouth trays are a perfect fit and completely comfortable to wear. The active bleaching gel is also stronger for enhanced brightening power.
When supervised by a professional dentist, teeth whitening is safe. We ensure you are suitable, give tailored advice for treatment, and ensure your teeth and gums will not be damaged. We only use regulated products for your safety. You should avoid whitening kits that can easily be bought online or in beauty salons, as these are not regulated and could cause side effects such as gum irritation and tooth sensitivity.
There are many causes of tooth discolouration. Some of the most common include the consumption of highly coloured foods and drinks such as red wine, coffee and tea. Some medications, ageing, smoking and trauma can also cause tooth discolouration. We can help you reduce staining and discolouration with effective teeth whitening treatment.
